Monroe County West Virginia

Monroe Country, West Virginia is located in the south eastern part of the state. It borders Greenbrier Country and Summers County, both in West Virginia, and Alleghany, Craig, and Giles County, all in Virginia. Mornoe County is a very rural county, country living at its best. In Monroe County you will not find a bus stop, a set of train tracks, a four lane highway, or a red light.

Monroe became a separated County, separated from Greenbrier, in 1799. The new County was named for James Monroe, Virginia's governor at the time. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 474 square miles (1,227 km²), of which 473 square miles (1,226 km²) is land and 0 square miles (1 km²) (0.06%) is water. Although Monroe County is a very rural county, it is close to many great amenities. When living in Monroe County you are 1-hour or less from Historic Downtown Lewisburg, home of the West Virginia Osteopathic School of Medicine, Athens, home of Concord University, Blacksburg Virginia, home of Virginia Tech. You are also within driving distance to Bluefield College, Bluefield State College, and New River Community College.

You are also about an hour from Pipestem Resort State Park, located in neighboring Summers County, which offer 2 golf courses, horseback riding, hiking, disc golf, water sports, indoor and outdoor pools, and much more. Also in Summers County is the Bluestone Lake and Wildlife Management Area. Also you are one hour or less to the Cascades Recreation Area, Jefferson National Forest, Pembroke, in Giles County Virginia. Another amenity just an hour away, is Winterplace, which offers skiing, tubing, and snowboarding. Another great amenity, located in Peterstown is Fountain Springs Golf Course, an Russel Breeding 18-hole Course.
